Has anyone heard if and when ipads might start using multiple monitors? I use dual monitors alot and was considering replacing my desktop with something like a Surface or Ipad. I do prefer ipads in general except they seem to lack all these features despite costing as much or more than Surface devices. I was thinking that with the new ipad os they might be doing this soon.

It looks like the ipadOs is already going the direction of extended desktop (i found this article below). I knew mirroring worked but as you surmised, that isn't really what I was going for but the article below that i'm linking to shows that some apps are expanding and using a 2nd monitor as more than just a larger mirrored image. Maybe apple with fully expand the capabilities in the next year or two before I build a new PC.

You are asking us to speculate as to future features of iPadOS - which is something we can’t do here. Any future developments or product features are known only to Apple.
Everyone here is an end-user just like you - and we only know what is officially announced through the usual channels. Apple also do not participate in any of these community discussions.
However, all that said, you can connect an external display to your iPad using an HDMI Adapter via your Lightning or USB-C port as is appropriate to your device. This will permit you to “mirror” your iPad screen, display video - or show presentation material from Apps such as Apple Keynote whilst keeping presentation notes separately visible on your iPad. Perhaps not what you are looking to achieve in context of the extended “desktop” experience to which you may be accustomed on other systems - but it does show the potential capability if were to be developed.
I found actually the exact opposite.
Microsoft Surface and Surface Pro tablets can get pricey, once you start setting up custom hardware configurations.
Just as expensive or more than ANY iPad and pricing that is more inline with an Apple MacBook/MacBook Pro.
And Microsoft charges a premium for their Surface/Surface Pro external peripherals, just like Apple.
Microsoft Surface tablets are more expensive then iPads.
Microsoft treats their Surface/Surface Pro tablet lineups as full computers with a touch screen interface, so their tablet hybrid is priced accordingly.
Apple is keeping iPads as iPads, mobile tablet computing devices that still run a less sophisticated, simplified OS, whether iOS or iPadOS.
