The only way to update it is to purchase a newer model. (I Have one myself and only use it to play music now.

Whatever apps are still on these devices are going to be the versions they are going to be stuck with forever!
Many that do not need an active Internet connection to work will still work, those that need some form of Internet interoperability, will definitely cease to work or function.
