I bought an iPhone from Best Buy and used it on cricket for about a year and now I want to go to Verizon and it is saying its locked with cricket. but when I call cricket they say it isn't their phone so they can't unlock it. how do I get it unlocked from cricket so I can use it on Verizon.

Phones sold by Best Buy lock to the first US carrier used to activate the phone. In this case, it is locked to Cricket. You need to discuss this with Cricket and explain that you got the phone from Best Buy and activated it on the Cricket network.
Best Buy does not sell unlocked phones. They sell phones that will lock to the first US carrier that is used. This is a Flex plan. Those phones cannot be unlocked to be used overseas, but many of the carriers will not unlock those phones if you have not used a major carrier to activate them and they did not sell them.
It is Cricket's responsibility to unlock the phone so you can use it with Verizon. The phone could possibly be still under contract to them. Carriers can lock iPhones to them and Apple is not responsible for that.
