iMessages - access to full file on iCloud

iMessages are supposedly saved on iCloud, but we do not see the messages there. We want to save all of our messages "for posterity", eg as an independent file. How? And how do we access messages dated prior to June 2014, which appears to be as far back as we can download from iCloud. I would appreciate guidance! Question pertains to Mac and ios.

As Eric noted, you can't access the messages synced through iCloud.

I'd recommend an application such as PhoneView (Mac) or TouchCopy (Mac or Windows). Both will allow you to archive messages from your phone to either PDF or text files. I've used PhoneView for years for just that purpose.

If the messages are not on your device, they're gone.
