There is no bookmark on upper left to turn off safari iPad sidebar. It is areal pain in the a@$

Then you are looking at something different. The bookmarks bar does not display ads. As I asked earlier can you provide a screenshot of what you are looking at? You can redact any personally identifying information.
Don’t have time to fool with it now. I’ll just close it each time it intrudes.
