iPad via HDMI to TV

Once upon a time connecting my iPad thru an HDMI cable to a TV let me play videos on the TV. Suddenly that stopped working. Why? How to fix?

When this was working I would make the physical connection & then set the TV to take input from the HDMI connector. The iPad screen would be mirrored on the TV. When I started a video on the iPad the video (& audio) would play on the TV but not the iPad. Now only the audio plays on the TV. The screen is blank.
