Help creating email alias MBP w/o ICloud

I'm stumped. Despite repeated attempts, I am unable to create an email alias on a MBP, OS High Sierra (v10.13.6), in Apple Mail (v11.5). I don't use ICloud for anything. Apple's instructions for creating an alias in OS High Sierra are:

What goes into the name/email address fields that appear when the + sign is clicked? No matter what I enter, I get Mailer Daemon mail whenever I mail to or from the alias I tried to create. Any help in the steps to create an alias in the Mail App, without ICloud, would be very much appreciated. I couldn't find a specific "Mail" discussion group. Sorry.

Hello Barney-15E.

Thank you for taking an interest with my question and the time to respond. I've researched your queries and have found that my email provider does not allow aliases or sub-accounts. I tried using the comma once used in mail 4.0 on an IMac (OS Snow Leopard - I can't give it up!), but that didn't work either. I was hoping to keep my aliases with Apple Mail, but it appears that I may have to set up something with Yahoo, Google or the like, though I'd prefer not to.

Every search I've done on creating an alias in Mac Mail on a Mac, and not in ICloud, leads me to believe it can be done (Apple says so!) but I'm afraid that I'm missing something. Perhaps Santa Claus will bring me the answer. Thank you again for your response. Have a great Holiday.

Create an email alias

In Mail on iCloud.com, click the Action pop-up menu in the sidebar, then choose Preferences.

If you don’t see the sidebar, see Show or hide the sidebar in Mail on iCloud.com.

Click Accounts, then click “Add an alias.”

Provide the requested information:

Alias: The text you provide becomes the email address (alias@icloud.com). An alias must contain between 3 and 20 characters.

Full Name: The name you provide appears in the From field of the messages you send.

Label: iCloud Mail uses the label to categorize messages sent to the alias. Alias labels appear only in Mail on iCloud.com.

Label Color: Select a color for the label.

Click OK, then click Done.

Hello Barney-15E,

I also tried creating an alias on an IMac w/OS Snow Leopard, (I can't give it up!) Mail 4.0, with a comma that was once used but that failed as well.

All the research I've done on creating an alias on a Mac with Mac Mail, and not in ICloud, leads be to believe that it can be done (Apple says it can!), but I'm missing something. I have no idea what to put into the name/email fields. Nothing works.

It appears that I may be forced to create an account with Yahoo, Google or the like, though I'd prefer to keep it within the Apple universe.

Thank you again for your interest and response.

BDAqua,

Thank you for taking the time to respond. My hope in creating an alias was to do it without ICloud. Apple has instructions on how to achieve this, I've just been unsuccessful in doing so hence, my plea for assistance.

In your follow up post you said, in part, that "ASC will do that". Do what? I fear that my ignorance is showing.

Barney-15E,

Thank you for the follow up. My, apparently incorrect, interpretation of Apple's Mac Mail alias instructions led me to believe that it could be done within the Mail program itself. Wishful thinking!

I'm about to post another mail question that, perhaps, you, BDAqua or another will be able to help me sort out.

Thank you again.

I think the part you are missing is that the alias has to be part of your email account. It is not independent of your email account. If your email provider doesn't allow aliases, there is no way you can create one in Mail for that account.

An iCloud email account will allow several aliases--those are all part of iCloud email service.
