what do you mean insufficient?
The minimum required to INSTALL MacOS is 2GB, but that leaves MacOS so little it barely operates. 6 to 8GB GB and above it gets "appropriately responsive". But lack of main RAM does not make the graphics card seem dead at ANY level.
Thanks Grant.. I’m trying to eliminate any possible causes that might affect the cards’ performance. Some say it may be an overheating issue. Either way it’s a knotty problem since replacement parts are virtually nonexistent in pairs. Curious, with GPU activity monitor shows only one card active. Apparently that’s normal, one for graphics one for off-line ( whatever that means ).

Only one of the two cards has display interfaces. That card is fully capable of driving up to six displays with no perceptible slowdowns. The other card is completely free for GPU computation, such as advanced shading.
Many Video editors are surprised to find that their graphics card is not the bottleneck. More often, I/O is the bottleneck, because there is too much contention for too few drives. Re-organizing so that there is a separate drive for sources, a separate drive for destinations, a separate drive for libraries or scratch-es if that is part of your workflow, and that none of these is the SSD boot drive produces tremendous throughput gains.
Would insufficient system RAM affect the FirePro D500’s performance?
If I’m going from d500 I would need both a and b cards?
They only shipped matched pairs. No one knows whether unmatched works or not. So yes, you need both unless you find out otherwise.
