Iphone 6 plus will not sync with apple watch series 4

I have a iPhone 6 Plus and its updated to 12.4.4 which is the latest software update, so when I try to sync my apple watch series 4 with it , Im told that my iPhone needs to be updated in order to sync with my watch. My phone is already using the latest software, can someone please help me with this issue.
