removing prior owners apple id/icloud login on iphone 6

I got a an iPhone 6 from a friend who hasn't used it in 2 years but unable to remove the older apple i.d although the account was supposedly deleted by the previous owner.

iPhone 6, iOS 12

Have the previous owner take the device, the original purchase receipt with the serial number, and a photo ID to the nearest Apple Store.

There is no known way to bypass activation lock. The only other option would be for the previous owner to contact Apple Support.

The previous owner says the previous apple id that pops up on my iPhone 6 does not exist anymore and is unable to get a password on the "forgot pw link". I am still unable to get the primary icloud login erased.
