Why can’t I connect my phone number to my new iPhone?, it keeps saying waiting for activation.

See this for activation issues. If you can't activate your iPhone - Apple Support otherwise, if you did not get a new SIM from your carrier, you may need to do that if they cannot activate the new number on the old SIM.
