american SIM card

My Austrian iphone doesn’t work with an American SIM card. When i put the SIM card in it first says “confirmation required” then i click “dismiss” and then it says “invalid SIM”. What can i do?

Contact the carrier it's locked to.

Was your phone unlocked so that you could use any SIM card? What is the exact error message that you get?

Yes it’s unlocked. It says “activation required” immediately after i put the SIM card in and then it says “invalid SIM”

That indicates the phone is not, in fact, unlocked.
