How do I recover my password for my iPad

I can’t sign into my iPad. Can’t remember the password for the device. It tells me that this account uses an iCloud password to login and if I need to change the password use another device to change it to an Apple ID.apple.com. I go to that site and it tells me absolutely nothing about how to change the password to get into the device. WTF
