I'm noticing a weird sound delay on my Apple TV when I resume or fast forward content streamed from my Mac

I’m at my wits end. I can’t figure out what the problem is. I am noticing a weird sound delay when I resume or fast forward content streamed from my Mac. If I start a movie from the beginning...no problem. Only when I resume or fast forward, so I get a delay that can take 30 seconds or longer for the audio to kick in, but even then it’ll still be behind. I’ve tried calibrating, resetting...everything. Could it be something on my Mac? It doesn’t so this for internet streamed content....just stuff on my home network. Any suggestions? I’m running latest version of High Sierra.

thanks!

Try this:

  • Turn Off Dolby Digital:

Go to: Settings > Audio & Video > Dolby Digital > Select: “Off

  • Change Audio Output to Auto:

Go to: Settings > Audio & Video > Audio Output > Select: “Auto

  • Change HDMI Output to Auto:

Go to: Settings > Audio & Video > HDMI Output > Select “Auto

Tried all of these suggestions and no luck. I sent the report to Apple. Hopefully there's a solution!

Great Job Reporting this Apple! The more they hear of an issue firsthand, the more they’ll know what to fix. Next Give Apple a Call:

For a Solution:

This is what I would try: Pull the plug on my Modem, Router, Television, and Apple TV and all other wireless devices. After about a minute I’d plug them all in and try it.

If I’m still having issues/problems with this lip-sync, I would take it to my friends place.

The purpose of the above is to verify all is resolved (by repowering your wireless devices), and to verify it is actual your Apple TV (by trying the device on a different network.

The odd thing is this only happened after I updated to tvOS 13.

Update and Submit Feedback:

Update your Apple TV and Mac the most recent security updates.

Provide Apple with Feedback on this:

I most certainly recommend you inform Apple of this. That seems especially important, being that lipsync may get in the way of many out there. Particularly for watching movies, and for Presentations.

Disable Atmos on an Apple TV 4K:

If nothing works. Just upgrade to AppleTV 4K.

Atmos gets in the way, and using the AppleTV 4K, apparently you can fix this by disabling Atmos. Go Here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250684802?answerId=251408327022#251408327022

And lipsync is nothing in Apple TV. That’s why using a projector with the option for lipsync would fix this nice and quick.

Get a Router Built for Streaming:

Knowing that this may be a router issue, then get a router that is built for streaming. Some are not built for streaming. So, look into the model, and see if that is a specification of it. If not, upgrade to such a router, and see where it goes from there. It would say it right on the router's original packaging.

Lipsync is Off.

So, check the settings in the device you are streaming this to. Perhaps its setting of lipsync is off by 30 seconds.

If that is of no option and is of no success... then try...

Resetting the Apple TV to Factory Settings:

That should ultimately fix this. Go Here: Reset or restore your Apple TV to its factory settings - Apple Support

Tried all of that in my ATV 4K and it didn’t work. Tried another experiment....tried home sharing through my iPhone and iPad Pro and it had the same results. I’m thinking it may be my router. I checked my network settings and (despite me having gigabit eithernet on both my Mac and the router) the router is only transmitting at 100 mbps in each port. This would make sense why the ATV2 is working properly, but not anything else as it’s in 720p and utilized a lower stream speed rather than the 4K. I’ll have to look into that next.
