Backing up Mac files on external hard drive to transfer on a Windows lap top

Hello all.Presently I have files on my Mac (PDFs,JPGs,ODTs) that I want to back up on my external hard drive to transfer (copy) onto a new Windows 10 HP lap top.What is the best way to do this so that the new laptop will be able to read the copied files?Thank you in advance.

When I set up my macbook pro, it did the put your computer next to it for setup thing. Did that get my files? I see some but don't want to wipe my macbook air for trade it in without being sure. Format the drive exFat.
