why are apple computer power adapters designed to detach from the plug. I am in the US if that matters. Seems annoying because it comes apart if you do not pull the power adapter directly away from the wall socket.

So that you can switch out the US plug for a plug needed by another country's power outlets.
Many electronic items are supplied this way as it's cheaper and convenient to supply a single power adapter with a separate plug fitting for the intended country. The alternative is to supply four different power adapters with plugs for every country that sells the equipment.
