If you have a 27-inch iMac with a Mini DisplayPort, any other Mac with a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port can use it as a display. Make sure you have a Mini DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable?
The new iMac only has USB-C ports — no Mini DisplayPort. I'm going to try one of the cables I have been researching (USB-C to M DP). I can always return it if it doesn't work. Thank you for your quick responses. Have a Happy New Year!
OK, good luck. And a Happy New Year to you too!
Connect them for what usage?
Sorry, I want to use my older iMac as an external monitor.
I've been looking at a lot of cables but they don't seem to support the mini displayport with the thunderbolt icon.
Just to restate what macjack said, your old iMac has to be a 27", not a 21.5".
