Dual screen set up for 27 inch iMac

Dual screen set up for 27 inch iMac. Model number A1312 the monitor is model a 1407.

I can get them to mirror each other but I can’t get them to work independently.

I understand there’s an adapter that Has to be purchased. But they vary so much I don’t know which one to get. Can anyone assist with this please?

Please visit > Use external monitors with your Mac - Apple Support

To use them in Extended Desktop, go to: Apple > System Preferences > Displays > select the Arrangements tab > un-check Mirror Displays.

You may also want to, go to: Apple > System Preferences > Mission Control and un-check the boxes until you become more familiar with using Dual Displays.

In your first post you said,

I can get them to mirror each other but I can’t get them to work independently.

So I was under the impression, that you already had the Thunderbolt Display plugged into the iMac's Thunderbolt Port and working. If that is so, then you do not need any other adapters.

You just need to turn off Mirroring and Arrange the Displays in Extended Desktop Mode.

So if I’m understanding what you’re saying, I do not need an adapter. Is that correct? Thanks for your help

Exactly what year model is your iMac?

Is the Display currently connected to the iMac? (if so how)

A Thunderbolt Display should be plug and play with a Mid 2011 27" Thunderbolt iMac and you just need to follow the above instructions.

A Thunderbolt Display is not compatible with a Late 2009 or Mid 2010 27" Mini DisplayPort iMac and there is no adapter that will help.

The reason that I asked you for the year model earlier, is because the A1312 identifier covers three 27" iMac year models. A Late 2009, a Mid 2010 and a Mid 2011. For later reference, if you go to the "Apple" on the menu bar and select "About This Mac" it will tell you exactly what year model iMac you have.

I'm also pretty sure at this point that you have a Mid 201, because that Thunderbolt Display will not work with the earlier 2009 and 2010 models.

You're welcome.

Thanks, yes it is a mid 2011 I do know that. The question that I still have is what adapter is needed to extend the iMac to display.

I have been working on this and have been unable to find a clear answer.

In all honesty I am not the most advanced computer person there is. But I’ve been doing a lot of research.

Thank you for your help.

If you have any idea of exactly what adapter I need to extend to the monitor please let me know a model number or some way of ordering it.

Thank you Brian

I tried what you said and still nothing it is exactly the same even more complicated is that when I turn the mirroring off the icons go to the monitor and my mouse won’t go to that screen. Any more advice would be appreciated
thanks Brian

You need to adjust the Arrangement of the Displays as described in the Apple Support Article that I posted above.

Using the Display Arrangements, you can move/drag the seconded display to the correct side of the main display and/or place the menu bar on either display.

It's not that hard to figure out after you play with it for awhile.
