You need to purchase the 2nd gen Apple Pencio to use with the 3rd gen, 2018 iPad Pro.
ONLY the 2nd gen Apple Pencil works with the 2018, 3rd gen iPad Pro.
Return that 1st gen Apple Pencil and get a refund and purchase the 2nd gen Apple Pencil, instead.
