I did not intentionally "favorite" any of my thousands of photos here, but somehow they now all have the little white heart on them and, worse, when I download one to my desktop to work with, the ****** heart follows. How to get rid of these?? Very frustrated. Thanks to anyone who can offer some guidance.

In photo application > open favourite folder hold shift key and click on photos that have heart icon on them , select the photos in less number as they are in thousands .
Take cursor on top menu bar , click on edit > click on undo add to favourites again and again .

Is the heart a hollow shape or a solid white shape? If it is just hollow, you can turn off the badge overlay in Photos in the View menu. Go to View - Metadata and disable the favorite badge.
