There are purchased items on the iPad error message

I received a message that a new update is available. When I try to install the update, I receive the error message "There are purchased items on the iPad "iPad" that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPad. Are you sure you want to continue?"

I have tried to manually do the transfer by right clicking on the device and selecting "Transfer Purchased" as well as selecting File->Transfer purchases from this iPad. I have validated that this computer is authorized to my iTunes account.

I do not want to lose purchases from the iPad....

Anyone know where to go from here?

Once purchased, you can always redownload an app for free, so you won't lose them whatever you do

I also had this message, it seemed In my case anyway that some apps I had downloaded directly to the iPad were not in my library, ( I keep my music library on an external HD so it is not always connected when I download an app etc. ) I cannot remember if I just clicked ok or performed a sync but files were copied and when finished I downloaded the update which worked perfectly.

I am having the same issue. Personally, I have about 40 apps and everything set up the way I want it. I don't want to have to download them again.

The problem is that the apps will not download to my iTunes library. They are set to sync, but none of them download. I was getting a sync error at first but I disabled my AV and then the apps sync would happen. However as soon as it starts it ends. I see the "first" app in the list start to sync then it says all complete. None appear in the library.

I just updated my iPad to 3.2.1 and was greeted with the same message, as if I should download some apps. That didn't make any sense so I took a screenshot of each of my 6 pages of apps, then went ahead and updated despite the warning, then afterward compared the restored app screens to the previous screenshots. They were all identical - all apps that were on the iPad were restored to the iPad in the exact same positions and also appear in iTunes.

Over the past few years, the iTunes app has added some great new features but I have seen more of these type of errors, warnings and just plain stupid interface issues than ever before. I share the iPad with my wife and if she adds a few apps through her iTunes, in order to update from my iTunes I have to log out and log in with the other account. That's not a problem but whenever I do, it never remembers our passwords though we've checked the box, and it takes me to the respective account screen instead of simply continuing with the update. Software is supposed to make it easier, not harder, to accomplish tasks.

But what about stuffyou didn't purchase from itunes but downloaded from CDs. I have a lot of stuff on my ipad that i downloaded from my old computer that capped out. Obviously, none of my ipad stuff is on the new computer. So how do i download it to the new computer without deleting all the apps and books i downloaded directly to the ipad?

Same problem - there are items on the ipad that need transferring. It's not a clear message. It does not tell you what needs transferring. For me, the problem was some free books downloaded to the iPad.

Fix: I think you need to "Sync" Books (Check Sync on the Books panel, then Apply).

(I right-clicked on the iPad in the sidebar, and chose Transfer. That worked. But if it happens again, I'd try simply syncing the Books)
