I have tried Unarchiver and Stuffit Expander 15 and 16 - neither can open it == it says it can't determine the file format. I think I would have used Stuffit to stuff-it [so to speak] and it's pretty old == any ideas?

A .sitx file would be a Stuffit archive. The free versions 16 Expander from the App Store should be able to open it. About the only reasons it wouldn't is either the archive is damaged, or it isn't a Stuffit archive. Meaning, it has an incorrect file extension.
