connecting external adaptor: HDMI vs. VGA

In a previous post I noted that I can not get my external monitor to work at the correct resolution with my new MacBook Air. I'm wondering tho, if it makes a difference if I connect with an HDMI adaptor vs. a VGA adaptor, which is what I've been using. I've tried hooking up two different monitors with the same results--either a stretched picture or compact picture that doesn't use the entire screen. Please advise.

I'm afraid not, only that HDMI is practically impossible to troubleshoot. It either works or it doesn't, and there isn't much you can do when it doesn't.

Even early model MBAs ought to be able to drive 2560 x 1600 so 1920 x 1080 certainly ought to work. Is it possible the Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter is limiting its resolution?

I happen to know a MBA has no trouble driving a 1920 x 1080 projector. The adapter I'm using is a $6 one from Monoprice. They don't happen to sell that one any more but I'd imagine almost anything should work.

(Update: I believe this is what I'm using: Monoprice Mini DisplayPort 1.1 to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support, Black)

Check your HDMI cable as well as the monitor's settings, if there are any to inspect.

It could be the adaptor. I am noticing that it blacks out intermittently as I'm working. I ordered a better HDMI cable, so maybe that will help. Also, when looking at these cables on Amazon there are different Thunderbolt options--1, 2, and 3. I have no idea what I should order. With Mac changing these adaptors all the time, I don't know what is the best option. thank you for your input John. I appreciate it!
