Delete some unneeded files off the laptop, or offload some stuff off the laptop and onto other storage, or upgrade the laptop storage to a larger disk or larger SSD?

How much you will want and need to delete and/or to offload or upgrade is probably a couple of times the usage of the iPhone, approximately.

Half a gigabyte is a pretty full disk, when disks and SSDs are routinely a terabyte. Various iOS devices are configured with 512 gigabytes of storage, and more. What your particular iPhone is configured with can be determined from Settings > General. But half a gigabyte of free space is basically a problem, all by itself.
