I have an older iMac running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6. I would like to update its security software. Is this possible or do I just junk the computer. It has barely been used.

No your computer has gone as far as it possibly can. It is now very obsolete, if you have a need to upgrade the OS then it is time to buy a new Mac. My 2011 is in the same boat, my plan is to replace it mid 2020.
If there are any updates available (I doubt there are) please run Software Updates in the Mac App Store.
I have tried that and there are no updates available.
Would this mean that there are no updates available that I can purchase?
Is my computer's hardware unable to support a new operating system?
