Just updated to Catalina and am trying to update my dock. When I drag an icon out of the applications folder, it just bounces back to the folder. It won't stay in the dock. What's wrong?

There is a right side of the Dock (see the divider line) reserverd for folders etc/ Apps go left of the line.
As an alternative you can launch the App— it will be in the Dock now—control click open the icon.
