Dark spots on Macbook Pro display

Hello,

I have a 17' Santa rosa 2,4 MBP with a matte hi-res screen. I started noticing some black/gray spots appearing near the center of the display (near the apple logo). They look like smudges, so at first i tried to gently clean the display with no result whatsoever.
I don't find them particularly annoying, but i'm afraid they will grow over time. Is there anyway to fix this? Is this a known defect, can i get the screen repaird/fixed even if it's out of warranty?
Greatly appreciate any useful feedback.

got my 15" macbook pro today and opened it to find a red dot on my screen, tried the same thing as i thought it was a smudge. taking it back to apple store tomorrow.

I had a similar problem on my 15" Macbook Pro display and got it swapped for a new one under the 12 month warranty. I'm a bit miffed as I'm convinced the replacement display is not as sharp and lacking the same colour depth as before. Will be taking it back next week!

I've got similar problems on my two week old Macbook pro 15" 2.53 ghz w/ matte display. After doing some Google research I've noticed a crop of these problems in 2008 Macbook pros, and am wondering if Apple are just recycling matte displays from the old 2008 batch and charging a premium.

I've got pretty much the same problem.

Anyways, I took it back to Apple for repair and they said it'd be fixed within 5 working days. I've never had this problem kind with any other laptop or monitor I've had over the last two decades, so I'm not overly impressed with this "premium" product straight out of the box!

To all:

If these are newer Macs (black keys, Unibody, etc.) you should be looking in the forum for the most recent MBPs here:

http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=251

The older MBPs (silver keys), whose forum you are now in, had their display issues, but not the same as many of you are reporting. I think you will maximize your chances of finding some answers in the other forums if your MBP has black keys.

Hi everyone, my macbook pro is 3 years and 1month old, through the time i have about 160 black/grey dots/spots, the most of them are tiny but i am using this for professional work and in retouch photos i have a huge problem.
Is there any solution i am obsiously out of warranty... 😟 i have those from the beggining but only a few countable 3-5 but now this is crazy!!! 160 and lost count no kidding... any solution??
