quick start from iPhone 5S to iPhone XS

Doing the quick start option to transfer info from my iPhone 5S to a new iPhone XS, and it has been showing as "setting up your Apple ID" on the new phone for quite a long time (like 20 minutes so far). It seems you can't exit the task either without maybe turning off the devices. Is this normal? The old 5S doesn't have much on it at all, so not sure what could be takin so long. Advice please?

Apple stopped selling the iPhone XS as a new device in September, 2019. So if this iPhone XS was previously owned, it should have been thoroughly cleansed by the previous owner.

The iPhone 5S would need to be using iOS 12.4 or later to have any data transferred from it.

Use Quick Start to transfer data from your previous iOS device to your new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

You should be using a good Wi-Fi connection to expedite the process.

You may force restart the iPhone XS as follows:

  • Briefly press the volume up button and release
  • Briefly press the volume down button and release
  • Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears

The force restart is sensitive to the timing of the buttons being pushed.

  • Press and quickly release the volume up button
  • Press and quickly release the volume down button
  • Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears
