Is there any way to channel the sound back and forth from the built in speakers to the external ones without unplugging the externals.? When I unplug the externals then replug them the device rejects the plug and I have to hold it in place for a minute or two until the plug is finally accepted.

Go to System Preferences > Sound > Output. Tick the Show volume in menu bar box.

Then a small speaker icon shows at the right on the menu bar. Click on it and you can select the output device of your choice.

Hope that helps,

Do you mean both external and built in speakers don't show at the same time in System Preferences > Sound > Output? If so this is maybe a different problem.

We need more information in order to help you: Mac model, macOS version, external speakers brand, how are the external speakers are connected to the Mac.

Regarding the connection, if you use the headphone jack, then what you describe is the expected behavior.

For EQ functions like bass and treble adjustments, it depends on the application used to play the sound. Look at the answer to your other post.

Imac 21.5; late 2013; OS Mojave 10.14.2;

I was able to use the equalizer. I do not understand why I was not directed to this when I inquired in help tho.

My speakers are only able to be plugged into the headphone jack, so that answers that. The OS does not accommodate this situation, obviously. Why does the computer forcefully eject the plug when I try to re-plug after having it out? If I were to rig an on/off switch in the speaker wire, would that work?

Well the question about Treble/bass was in an other post. This a user forum; users helping other users. No one from Apple here.

Anyways...

The headphone jack has nothing to do with the OS. It is an industry standard. What intrigues me is: "the computer forcefully eject the plug when I try to re-plug". You mean mechanically? I'v never seen that. Could you explain?
