iPod Nano never gets past "loading"

As my son never used his iPod Nano (7th gen) it's been passed to my wife. However when we connect to our Mac laptop the drive is seen correctly but shows no content at all, and when viewed in iTunes/Music again it is seen as a drive but the display continuously shows "loading", but never moves beyond that point. I've tried resetting the iPod, but as I can't get access via the laptop I can't do a factory reset.


Can anyone advise please...?
