mac won't start with external drives

My iMac Pro and 16" MacBook Pro both won't start (hangs at the Apple logo at startup) if I have external hard drives connected. I'm running 10.15.2 on both computers. The drives are 3 Promise Pegasus R6 connected via Thunder bolt 3 and a Lacie 6Big RAID. All the drives worked fine before updating to 10.15. My work around for now is to unplug the drives before I start the computer. Once the computer is up and running, I plug the drives in and they work fine. Something at start up doesn't like drives.

Thanks for your help.
