CleanMyMac

A couple of weeks ago, I installed and ran a utility, CleanMyMac by MacPaw, on my iMac. Afterward, I was unable to access the internet from any browser, getting an error that you would expect if the ISP or router was down:

No internet

There is something wrong with the proxy server or the address is incorrect

ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED

However, none of my other devices (iPad, acBook, Windows PC, iPhone) had any such trouble.

I have had very little luck with the MacPaw tech support. After numerous calls, chat box entries and emails, they finally had me run a diagnostic utility and I returned the output, but have had nothing but a couple of emails promising action in the last week or so.

Apple support was very attentive and spent considerable time with me on the phone, but were unable to help. Ditto for my ISP.

Normally, I’d have been suspicious of installing an app like this, but it has reasonable reviews and I even know people who like it. Needless to say, I don’t recommend the company or any of its products.

Anybody have any suggestions?

CleanMyMac is considered malware by most experienced users on these forums. Please locate the developers uninstall instructions and uninstall it immediately. Mac OS does not require nor does it benefit in ANY fashion by using antivirus, cleaning or ANY other third party "maintenance" app. If simply kept up-to-date and otherwise left alone Mac OS will run quickly, securely and efficiently for many years for most users.

Happy ending. Got to looking at my proxy settings and found SOCKS was set. Researching on Apple support forums, I found that this was only necessary for specific situations AND that it can be used by botnets. I removed the setting and all my problems disappeared. I have never accessed the proxy settings, so it HAD to have been set by the CleanMyMac utility. From my dealings with them, I discovered that they are based in Ukraine. Caveat emptor!

Sorry to hear you installed that crapware. CleanMyMac has a terrible reputation here. The best course of action now would be to completely uninstall CMM as whatever was done probably left behind files that may still be running.

Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that's very useful to us in finding problems. Also it will give us further specs on your Mac. After it runs post the log file here. It will contain no personal information. Allowing full drive access will improve the quality of the report.

To post the log file click on share report and use the Additional Text icon in your reply window.
