Can’t get imessages

Phone updated last night, now iMessages won’t activate. Tried turning on and off in settings and also tried turning off in settings and restarting phone. Neither one worked. I have an iPhone 7

Hello Soccertbug,

Please NOTE: It can take up to 24hrs to activate iMessage & FaceTime once the feature has been enabled and logged into with your Apple ID. Toggling this feature OFF at anytime will reset the 24hr clock. Please understand thats the max time it will take. Most activations happen within a couple of minutes.

Assuming you've waited 24 hrs and its still unable to activate. We will need to know the following.

  • What alert or error message do you see in Settings - Messages?

  • Are you able to successfully send SMS text messages to non-iPhone devices? This will ensure your text messaging feature is working correctly as its a requirement in order for iMessage to activate. If you experience issues sending or receiving SMS messages, you will want to contact your wireless carrier to resolve this issue before attempting to use Messages.

You will want to also ensure you're cellular data & wifi are both working correctly. You can test this out by doing the following.

  • Go to Settings - WiFi - Turn OFF, and test and see if you can use the internet. If you can, you know cellular data works.
  • Go back to Settings - WiFi - Turn ON, connect to your WiFi and test and make sure you can browse the internet.

If you have any issues using WiFi or cellular data, you will need to contact your wireless carrier or internet provider for assistance or contact whomever controls your wifi network for assistance.

If both work no issue at all. Contact Apple Support and give let them know the alert or error message you are getting, let them know you waited 24 hrs, let them know that WiFi & Cellular work and let them know SMS works. From there they can check a few things on the backend to see if something is stopping your iPhone from shaking hands with Apple to activate the messages feature.
