Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and depending on which Mac model you're referring to, download El Capitan, High Sierra, or Mojave.

Well, I have MacBook Pro

Mid 2012

I've tried to hit the Software Update tab.

It goes to Apple Software. I hit updates. And then...

After I hit the update tab it consistently says that an error occurs -- has this: (102)
