Which Airport card for late 2003 G5 do I need?

Hey guys, I hope someone here can help...

For days I've been trying to connect a power mac G5 which I've recently acquired to my wireless network but with no joy what so ever.

The machine has an Airport Extreme card installed which is recognized by the system but it won't, no matter what I try, connect to the network. I think perhaps it's the wrong card for this system? Here are a few specs:

Power Mac G5 late 2003
PPC 970 (2.2)
1.6 GHZ
Bus 800 MHZ
And 1 CPU

Could someone point my in the right direction as I've had to revert back to using my G4 system which coincidentally picks up the network with no problem at all, thanks!

Look elsewhere for the source of my issue!? Don't you think I've already been doing that? Posting here was my last resort to get some help, I'm in no way new to Mac's and I don't like to be beaten as I can usually figure most issues out myself...

upcut... Thanks for the link but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to be looking at... Yep I've checked the antenna cable and the external antenna and all is hooked up as it should be. The G4 I'm using right now is in exactly the same the same location in my house as the G5, the G4 has full signal and runs perfectly fine while the G5 does, well, nothing....

Is the antenna connected ?

Have you cleaned out the G5 ? Whch OS is it running ?

What is the issue / are the issues you are facing ? What do you do to try to establish a network connection ? and what feedback do you get ?

No signal ?

Intermittet signal ?

Password not accepted ?

What else is connected to the G5 ? via Ethernet ? via FireWire ? via Bluetooth ? via Internal Modem ?
What is the oder of the Network interfaces in the System Preference ? (open Network System Pref, pick "Network Port Configurations" under "Show:"

No consolation, my AirPort signal strength in my G5 is criminally awful about 18 inches from the wireless antenna. Of course, my old G4 is in the way. And a 6-way power brick.

Wow, questions lol...

The antenna is connected
The OS is 10.5.8 (recently upgraded from 10.5.6)

The issues, Airport card is installed and recognized by the system, it's in system profiler. It will not pick up on the wireless network as apparently there is no signal (which I know there is a signal as I'm using it right now) When I try to establish the connection I get a manner of different things: Connection timeout, connection failed, wrong password (or not accepted)

There is no Ethernet or firewire, no bluetooth - Airport is always on top of the order. I've never had an issue like this with Airport in the past, in fact I can't remember the last time I faced something like this on a Mac 😟

Just questions you have to ask, and you've answered all of them.

Looks like the external antenna may be the issue. Mine is back in the original G5 box, but very few 2nd hand G5's come with it included - from what I've seen on eBay. It never caused me any real issue, the wireless router 18in away is also a Gigabit switch, so good quality Ethernet cable gives me a network connection 20x to 30x faster than perfect wireless reception could ever give me - handy for multi-GB file transfers to the MDD or Mac Pro (some 24in the other side of the router).

Thanks for this Simon.. I'm also thinking it could be the antenna although it was new and sealed when I bought it (although it was from eBay) I've ordered a 3rd party usb wireless dongle that I hope will sort the issue, I just don't get it though, I can't understand why my aging G4 picks up the signal fine and the G5 doesn't even seem to make the effort lol I'm sure there's a way round it just have to battle on I guess...

I recently installed an airport card from ebay on my old G5 tower mac, worked perfectly when I installed the card. My G5 already had the antenna part already attached to my mac. But I believe the wifi should still work even if its not attached. It might be your network thats the issue. Maybe only a certain amount of devices can connect to your router...I know I have had issues before with my mac connecting to networks. Sometimes what helps is reseting the modem and router.

Other times its the security settings on the router that make it not work, or your firewall one the mac is blocking your connection. What might help also is deleting the connections you have in your network settings and switching the location to Automatic and then try setting up a new wifi connection. Another last resort is swapping out your router for a newer one if your router is older. Sometimes that helps too... I'm using this kind of router Linksys Linksys Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router WRT610N. Works great with macs and has a good radius not to mention you can setup up 2 types of bands.

Sometimes radio frequencies can disrupt a connection. Like for say an xbox or microwave... Hope something in here helps you cuz I totally get how frustrating it can be when you cant connect xD

Heres a link to where I got my G5 airport card if you might think its your aircard.

Ok, so I've decided to mission on with the problem... Somehow, the AP is now picking up the network but it is now refusing the password (which I know is right) it keeps giving me the connection failed message, seems like a never ending circle of issues! I've tried using the router without protection, turning off the password but that doesn't work either. The G4 I'm using right now doesn't even ask for a password, it just connects straight away and I have full signal. I've tried also using the same settings from this Mac on the G5 but still nothing so I'm still beating my head against the wall trying to figure this out...

Mmm, perhaps something hanging around in the System prefs that causes your connection attempt to use the wrong encryption type. What is the encryption type, you'll be limited by what the original AirPort card, on 802.11b, can support.

Make sure it selects the right one when you key your password. Not familiar with OSX 10.5 wireless connectivity (OK, it's on my Mac Pro, but I've never used it). I know that some of the connection routes (ie. connect to a specific network in the Network System Pref, let you key the password there with no option to select the encryption method.

I'm sure that the Mac OS gets it right nearly all the time, but my PBG4, running OSX 10.4, used to get it wrong more often than not (auto-selecting WPA when it was a 128-bit WEP network and WPA2 Personal when it finally was a WPA network.

In earlier OS's you can force it to let you choose the encryption method by selecting "Other..." from the list of wireless networks to join.
