Time Machine Backup Failed?

I am running Mac OS Catalina 10.15.2 on an Imac 27 and am starting to have TM backup failed errors. The errors do not occur but about once a day or two.

I have erased and started over again on my LaCie 3TB Thunderbolt drive but that has not eliminated the error messages.

I have held down the option key and selected the TM icon to verify backups but that is greyed out when I try and select it.

I usually get one error during a days worth of backups.]]

Any ideas or suggestions?

If that message reappears is likely the TM backup disk has been operating in a state of failure, and will continue to reappear with increasing frequency.

The solution is to replace it.

Thanks again.
Would you recommend a new SSD drive over TB? Can a USB 3.0 SSD be daisy chained?
If my Imac is a 2017 model would it have USB 3.0 or 2.0?

A 2017 would be USB 3 From System Info—

Yes you can daisy chain .

Dealers choice on port connection.

Thanks, I was hoping that would not be the case, the drive is only about 3 years old.
I will keep an eye on it.

Any idea on why I can not access the verify backups function when I select option-TM?

Drives can fail at anytime, even brand new out of the box. Rotational drives typically 3-5 years.

The verify option is limited to Network Disk—

If you back up to a network disk, Time Machine periodically verifies that your backups are in good condition. This scheduled verification happens automatically, but you can manually verify a backup at any time.
