Yes, I would definitely call support (and I did). There were a lot of issues with this free offer and its intersection with an already active subscription. It took about 20" and a very helpful support tech to iron it all out.

I had to send proof of purchase of a new Apple device. The tech had to cancel the old subscription. We had to decide how to address my multiple Apple IDs. He had to send a redemption code. I had to enter it under the correct Apple ID. We had to be sure family sharing was on.
It’s been reported by others a one year extension is added onto whatever you plan subscribed to. If in doubt Contact Support
