Why do 1046 photos take up 17 almost 18 gigabytes of storage? This is very frustrating

Are any or most of those high resolution photos perhaps taken by a Digital Camera other than the iPhone's camera?

No, they were all taken on my iPhone XR and my old iPhone 6s+. Most of them are from my XR.
