Upgraded to Catalina.
The Grab App now only grabs the desktop window, (1) will not grab any other open window no matter what desktop the preference is assigned to (2) and no matter what I pick to capture

Grab 'used to' work for me up until a couple of weeks ago.
The program was from the original utility applications when the Mac was purchased; but now with version 10.15, apparently it's vanished and not functional. I had parked the application on the dock and have now replaced it with the Screenshot app. Thanks for the reply; this is perfect.

Grab is no longer part of macOS -- it's been replaced by "Screenshot.app" located in /System/Applications/Utilities folder.
Where did you get the "grab" program you're using?

Press "command shift 4", release the keys then press the space bar. The cursor will change to a camera icon. Hover it over the desired window then click.
Sorry. Then I have no idea what you're doing wrong. Works on all five of my Macs running Catalina.
See if it works while in Safe Mode.

Your suggestions are file screen captures, close but no cigar.
I'm trying to using the Grab app, which is only capturing the desktop.
Ugh...the camera is a big ugly fail. It wasn't in the cigar category.
