You can use a soft brush to try and get dirt out. You can also, very carefully, use a toothpick wrapped in cotton wool -- but make sure to take extra care so that you don't damage the charging port.
In addition, you can buy kits online so you can safely clean it.
Never, ever, use a fibrous material (such as cotton wool) to clean inside the connector of your device. The fibres can snag on the delicate electrical pins - and cause serious damage if pulled.
