I looked up how to do a hardware test. Put in the "Mac OS X Install Disc 1". Then restart the computer. Hold down D before the gray screen appears. However, every time I do that during the gray part my MacBook Pro ejects the installation disc. Am I doing something wrong?
MacBook Pro3,1,
Mac OS X (10.5.8),
Intel Core 2 Duo
Look at the actual discs. One of them will say something about Apple Hardware Test right on the disc. That is the one you want in the drive at boot. It's not always the first disc.
Also I might add . . . it's doing something different now. I restarted the computer with the installation disc inside and I held down the "option" key before the gray screen appeared. The CD shows up on my desktop and has install options. Then I tried holding down "D" again after restarting. It completely ignored the hardware test, and did the desktop thing again (showing the Install options). I'm really confused now.
I've tried the cleaning disc . . . but it only helped me with getting my DVD's to burn again. It doesn't help even help assist to ignite the hardware test in any way.
It's possible your DVD is damaged. You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -
