How do I do a hardware test on my mac?

I looked up how to do a hardware test. Put in the "Mac OS X Install Disc 1". Then restart the computer. Hold down D before the gray screen appears. However, every time I do that during the gray part my MacBook Pro ejects the installation disc. Am I doing something wrong?

MacBook Pro3,1, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Intel Core 2 Duo

Also I might add . . . it's doing something different now. I restarted the computer with the installation disc inside and I held down the "option" key before the gray screen appeared. The CD shows up on my desktop and has install options. Then I tried holding down "D" again after restarting. It completely ignored the hardware test, and did the desktop thing again (showing the Install options). I'm really confused now.

It's possible your DVD is damaged. You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -

You're not having any luck here on these forums. Take the computer & your system disc to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you. Let them figure out why your disc does not work. Or look for solutions on YouTubes tutorial videos, Do-It-Yourself Laptop Repair, FixYa, Computers and Apple Portables: Troubleshooting the slot load optical disc drive
