Automatically Save Offline

In Settings, in the “Automatically Save Offline” setting for Safari, what does “Automatically save all Reading List items from iCloud for offline reading” mean?  What “items” might these be?

iPad Pro, iOS 13

In the Safari app , save interesting items in your reading list so you can revisit them later. You can even save the items in your reading list to iCloud and read them later when you’re not connected to the Internet.

iPadOS 13.3

Hello, dominic23, thank you for your reply and for your reference to the iPadOS manual.

It seems that I have been following the iPad Settings/Safari instructions correctly.  I have the “Automatically Save Offline” setting to On.  It’s just not working with the New York Times.

I have a paid subscription to the NYT; I’m permitted to read any article I wish and as many as I like.  However, when I save NYT articles to my Reading List in Safari, those articles are not available for me to read when I am offline.  When offline, the article menu item has a message that says, “Not available for offline reading.”  I have the same problem with NPR articles.  Even the Apple Support web page you pointed me to is “Not available for offline reading.”

At this point, I don’t of any web pages that actually do work with this iPadOS feature.  I would appreciate knowing that.  Thank you.

Well, that was interesting.  I did not know that the NYT had a webpage for “Today’s Paper”.  I’ve been using the site “https://www.nytimes.com”, which is a real time presentation of the news—it changes constantly throughout the day—and includes archival articles, as well.  I think I may find Today’s Paper a pleasurable experience, as well.  domnic23, thank you for pointing me to the link!

However, I still wonder, if the NYT and NPR—and even the Apple support pages—are “Not available for offline reading”, then what is?  What is the iPadOS function “Automatically Save Offline” good for?  Does anybody know?
