iPhone and OS X add country code, then text fails to send

When I use an automated response to a phone call on my iPhone, I get the message, "Error Invalid Number. Please re-send using a valid 10 digit mobile number" because iOS adds the country code (which is not needed if I call -- either from the dial pad or my contact list.

When I use Messages.app on my Air, entering the 10-digit phone number, I also get the message, "15757765640 Error Invalid Number. Please re-send using a valid 10 digit mobile number". I entered only 5757765640, which works fine from my phone.

How can I set Preferences so that the country code is not added?

Called phone support.

Because the number I use (response to telemarketer) is not capable of receiving text (usually a land line), the operating system intercedes and lets me know that it cannot send a text.

Generally I use my contact list for sending text, and these go without protest.

Thanks for posting to the Apple Support Communities. I understand there are issues adding a country code to call on your iPhone. I'll do what I can to help.

You could try turning off Dial Assist in Settings > Phone which might cause this behavior.

Thanks for the additional information. Since it's only supposed to put in the country code upon request, try these general suggestions:

Restart your iPhone
Remove the software on the iPhone and add it back:

1. Back up your iPhone: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
2. Restore the iPhone to factory settings using a computer: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
3. Set up the iPhone as new to test if the behavior still happens.

If it does happen when set up as new, reach out to the Apple Support team: Contact Apple Support

If it doesn't, try restoring your backup to see if it happens again: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support

This happened on my iPhone 6. I upgraded to iPhone 8 and it still happens. So I have done all that you suggest except reset to factory.

Resetting to factory settings and trying to remember every setting I've set is more than I want to bother with (and get wrong).

Since I mostly use the automated Phone responses with Telemarketer calls, that much effort is not worth my time.

It still is a pain. So I will call Apple Support and see if they can help.
