Airpod only playing through one ear

Hi,

recently purchased apple airpods - the use of both pods is inconsistent - sometimes both work, sometimes only left or only right - any assistance appreciated.

I'm linking through iPhone 11 and connect to Apple Watch series 5.

I have tried the various online suggestions with varied success !
