Mail won't open after catalina upgrade

My iMac automatically upgraded to Catalina (I didn't want this). Now when I try to open Mail, I get a message that it is upgrading my Mail database but nothing happens and the app never opens. Help!

apple mail getting an untitled window When Apple Mail application is being used on my Mac .. there is an additional Untitled Mail Window keeps popping up. unable to close this untitled window ... Please help me resolve this issue. Thanks.

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
