Using 2 iMacs as dual display setup (extended monitor)

I have two 27" iMacs (1 late 2015, 1 late 2017). The 2015 has no mini display ports, just the Thunderbolt. The 2017 has no mini display ports, just the USB-C. Based on what I had read, I understood that I can connect a Thunderbolt cable from th 2015, to a Thunderbolt to USB-C adaptor to plug into the USB-C port on the 2017. That's done, but the neither devices recognizes the other, and there are no extended display options under System Preferences. Any ideas? The first level of Apple Support has been useless and I haven't been able to figure out how to get to Tier 2 since my Apple Care is expired. Thanks.

You cannot use these two computer as an external display for one another. Please read Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode and you will see this. If you want external displays for them you will need to buy external display(s). Sorry but your question is not original and the answer is always the same. In short, what you want to do is impossible.
