Upgrading your mail database... This may take a few minutes

I have just upgraded my MAC OS to Catalina and opened the mail and it said "upgrading your mail database... this may take a few minutes" after it upgraded most of my old mail i can see the subject but no content in the message it self? does anyone know a fix for this as a lot of my saved and deleted messages i cannot read them!
