I downloaded Java two times but I still get that pesky popup!
Go to the Oracle site and download the most current version of the JRE and install it over the existing one. Or locate the uninstaller to download and uninstall the JRE. It isn't usually needed.
Oh, I see. You are trying to use or install the Java command line tool for which you need the JDK. What you have installed is the JRE runtime tool. You need to download the JDK from Oracle to resolve the popup or don't install/use the command line tool.
If you have downloaded the Oracle Java version and get the popup, then you have the wrong Java. You need the one from Apple - Download Java for OS X 2017-001.
Then the installer has probably found your Oracle installation. What is the popup that you are getting from your current system? What version of macOS are you running? The one you just downloaded is the last one released by Apple. I assume that in order to install it you will have to uninstall the one you already have. That would require an uninstaller from Oracle. Frankly, now I don't know that the Apple Java even works with Catalina. I only use the Oracle version but no popups.
Catalina version is 10.15.2
I keep getting a dialogue that tells me to install JDK if I want to use Java.
It is very irritating, and locks up my mouse until I click OK. It just locked me up again while typing this reply.
You must still have the command line tool installed, based on the error dialog. Unfortunately, I don't know where to find it nor what the filename is in order to search for it. Ask at Oracle on how to remove it.
I did the download as suggested but get this message.

This getting very confusing; I never had this irritating popup with Mojave, and I don't know how to stop it with Catalina.
I downloaded JRE.
Will see if the popup goes away.

Just downloaded JDK from Oracle.
I'm still getting the JDK popup.
I pressed "More Info" again, and followed instructions for download.
I would like to remove all Java stuff from my computer but cannot find any uninstaller.
