Salvage information from a old MacBook hard drive to new MacBook

So I currently own a MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2012 sadly I think its seen its day, when I try to boot it up it struggles as though the hardware can't keep up no more or something so I upgraded to the new MacBook Pro 16" 2019.

But now I need to gather up all my information from my old Mac and put it onto my new one, now I've posted on here before about this and was instructed to buy a 2.5 hard drive enclose which allows me to take my old hard drive and connect it via usb to my new Mac and then use the migration assistant but this didn't work, it seemed like the hard drive was struggling.

has anybody please got any tips for me, that would be much appreciated.

thank you in advance

That suggests the drive has failed or is failing. Maybe your old MBP was fine and just needed a new drive. Of course, we have no idea what you meant by "the HDD was struggling."
